“Ya Nee” is a South African expression, borrowed from Afrikaans, that captures the contradictory nature of everyday conversation. Literally meaning “yes-no”, it can express agreement, hesitation, resignation or simply an acknowledgement that says more than the words themselves. The meaning often lies in what is left unsaid.
Australia has been home for most of my adult life, yet those little pieces of South African life continue to find their way into my work.
Ya Nee celebrates the quirks, contradictions and unspoken understandings that make us who we are. Sometimes life is a yes, sometimes it’s a no, and sometimes it’s somewhere in between. And sometimes, ya nee is all you need to say.
