Acrylic and Pastel on Canvas
Is It? is a little piece of South African language and humour. “Is it?”, or “izzit?”, is the kind of expression you hear in South Africa in response to almost anything. Depending on how you say it, it can mean “really?”, “is that so?”, surprise, interest or simply tell me more.
I grew up hearing it, and like so many little expressions from home, it has stayed with me. It’s familiar, slightly cheeky and ambiguous - you can say Is it? and let your tone do all the work.
This painting is my colourful nod to those small pieces of language that travel with us. A reminder that sometimes a few simple words can carry an entire place, a memory and a sense of home.
