Sawubona

Acrylic, Charcoal, and Pastel on Canvas
"Sawubona" is a beautiful isiZulu greeting used in South Africa. It is commonly translated as “I see you” - an acknowledgement that goes beyond simply saying hello.
My memories of South Africa continue to shape the way I see the world. Its colour, energy, exuberance and deep sense of connection continually find their way into my work.
For me, Sawubona is about seeing and being seen - recognising another person, their presence and their place in the world. It connects beautifully with the idea of Ubuntu: that we are shaped by our relationships with others.
This painting is a colourful celebration of that simple but powerful idea - I see you. You matter. We are connected.
